Olli Moilanen (b. 1987) is a Helsinki-based composer whose main focus is on notated music. He also creates interdisciplinary projects that bring contemporary music into new environments. His compositional process involves embedding music into abstract structures like fractals to explore the relationships between emotions, memory, and time, aiming to generate emergence. He is currently supported by a two-year working grant from the Kone Foundation.
Moilanen graduated with excellent marks in composition from the Sibelius Academy in 2022, studying under Juhani Nuorvala and Veli-Matti Puumala. He was awarded a personal composition concert at the Helsinki Music Centre in fall 2023. His works have been premiered by ensembles such as Sinfonia Lahti, Helsinki Chamber Choir, Uusinta Ensemble, defunensemble, and the American Modern Ensemble, and performed at festivals including ISCM World New Music Days, Nordic Music Days, Mostly Modern Festival (NY), and Tampere Biennale.
In 2025, premieres include Crisalide (saxophone quartet), Ilman ja veden välissä (accordion solo), Pakahtuisi (bass flute solo), and Häikäisy (for bass flute and concert kantele) in Japan, where he will also present his music in Japanese.
Future projects include an accordion concerto for Veli Kujala and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra (conducted by John Storgårds), and a 2027 work for string quartet and soprano (Tuuli Lindeberg) based on Fernando Pessoa’s poetry. His work has been supported by several foundations, including the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation and the Finnish Music Foundation.
