Kaija Hinkula (b. 1984) works with expanded painting, stretching the form and structure of painting beyond its conventional limits. Her sculptural works exceed the boundaries of the traditional painting object and are often developed in dialogue with the surrounding space and environment. Through her work, she creates playful spaces for imagining different realities. Her practice includes sculptural paintings, site-specific installations, and video performances.
Hinkula graduated with a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki, in 2021. She has held solo exhibitions at, among other venues, Pragovka in Prague, HAM Gallery and Forum Box in Helsinki, and the Oulu Art Museum. Her works have also been shown in numerous group exhibitions in Finland and internationally. In 2025, she worked as a residency grant recipient at ISCP in New York and was awarded the shared Visual Artist Prize of the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts Foundation. In 2026, she began working with a three-year artist grant from the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
