On States of Utopia

On States of Utopia is a spoken word performance by Ansa Kurola exploring themes of rest, authenticity, and sensory euphoria. The work investigates the limits of neuronormativity in poetry and develops a neuroqueer poetics in which methodologies of overload, processing pauses, and hyperfixations are present in the writing. The poems ask: in what kind of sensory world are we capable of resting?

Reading Gradience, Exercise III

How does a place translate? How do language, place, and body seep into one another? How does the countryside become embodied? And how do flows of capital and their accumulation sediment into places? We reach toward one another and carry places with us, inevitably experiencing the world differently through them; places shape bodies, condition them, and recur again and again through gestures and their repetition. Capital exploits the unique qualities of places, yet also erases them in the process, creating homogenized spaces disguised as neutrality. What kind of place does a theatre space become when we read it as resonant, together, for one another?

Sanna J. Hirvonen’s work invites audience members to participate lightly and voluntarily through collective reading and listening. The performance was co-produced by Esitystaiteen seura.

Text, direction, concept: Sanna J. Hirvonen

taaj.uus

halun näyttämö/takahuone (“stage/backroom of desire”) is a performance by the taaj.uus collective in which audiences visit a sex therapist, identify with friends, and analyze percentages generated by love calculators. On stage, the audience peeks into the backrooms of desire: the Demi magazine forum, Sex and the City, and discount campaigns for lace thongs. The performance explores the drifting grip of sexual desire as both a private and collective experience, attempting to give language to limp bodies, calculating gazes, and loose kisses. How can one articulate a sudden, profound lack of desire that casts the hypersexualized self in a new light?

taaj.uus is an interdisciplinary alliance of spoken word poetry, improvised music, and sound created by Anette Antila, Reetta Uusimaa, and Andrea Martín.
